The Black Council of Windsor-Essex

W.E. Black Council is a collective of Black community organizations and advocates working to advance Black liberation by dismantling systemic anti-Black racism throughout the Windsor-Essex region. We achieve this through activism and advocacy with the goal of creating an equitable community for generations to come.

Windsor-Essex, our time is now.

The Black Council of Windsor-Essex/Le Conseil des Noirs de Windsor-Essex is the place where organizations and individuals, representative of the global African Diaspora in Windsor and Essex County, unite to contravene all forms of anti-Blackness found in our community. Created at the end of the “Pandemic Summer” of 2020, where the tragic deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor were witnessed amid the resonant cries of “Black Lives Matter”, The Black Council is where the collective, common good of the Black community matters most.

Black Joy: The Emancipation Jubilee

The legendary Emancipation celebrations, honouring freedom of enslaved Black people, put Windsor on the map as the northern stop on the underground railroad. We’ve now organized the 4th consecutive year of reviving those celebrations: the Emancipation Jubilee. Culture meets food, art, entertainment, fashion and more as we hear from political and community leaders celebrating the resilience and joy of the Windsor’s historic Black community.

Education Advocacy 📚

Through advocacy, research, and community engagement, we work to address systemic barriers, promote inclusive policies, and ensure that Black students have equitable access to educational opportunities. Our efforts focus on rallying resources and challenging systems to empower students, and foster an environment where Black voices and experiences are respected and valued in the classroom and beyond.

Data-Driven Advocacy

By collecting, analyzing, and sharing critical data, we empower our community, policymakers, decision-makers, and activists with the tools needed to challenge systemic inequality in our region. Our work bridges the gap between research and action, translating insights into effective policies and initiatives that advance racial equity. We aim to build a future where justice, opportunity and dignity are accessible to all Black residents.

“Freedom is never given. It is won.”
